I recently watched many documentaries about child sexual abuse by Catholic priests on Netflix and it got me into reading more about this. I suppose since it has been an issue consciously hid by the Catholic church and in some cases covered up by law enforcement and even the FBI, or at least mishandled in the case of Who Killed Sister Cathy, I started looking into why this happens. So far, I cannot get great answers, but it has to do with access to young people, and from what I saw in the films, giving thinking of priests as "Godlike." Some of the families and many community members didn't take up the priests for their abuse because they viewed the priests like Gods, and besides that, some people were threatened with death for speaking out. I would like to read a thorough psychosocial analysis of this issue. It is very disturbing.
