Thank you Toffy! I spent two years teaching English in Taiwan, and I definitely got privileges for speaking English from the US, but I mean, not every dialect from the US would have been appreciated. I didn't have qualifications, although I had taught English in the US, and enjoy teaching. I know I got many perks that other people didn't get. Also, about cultural responsiveness...so important. Many people who live in the US only speak English. I dedicated myself to learning Chinese and could get by pretty well. But not everyone makes that effort. My boyfriend is much more qualified than I am to teach English (he is Peruvian) but people doubt him over me because I grew up in the US.
